Women's Health Q&A

During a women’s health visit, Dr. Ramos can prevent, diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions that disproportionately affect women or that affect women exclusively. You should report any symptoms or changes you’ve noticed since your previous women’s health visit.

Common conditions affecting women’s health are:

Hormone disorders

Hormone disorders result in too many or too few hormones in your system. They can cause a wide range of symptoms affecting your mood, appetite, metabolism, sleep, and stress. You might experience weight fluctuations, hair loss, acne breakouts, and more.

A common hormone disorder in women is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and which can cause follicles on your ovaries, irregular periods, and excessive male hormone production.

Another common hormone disorder is when women have excess estrogen in relation to progesterone. This can cause irregular periods, brain fog, insomnia, painful periods, and extreme fatigue.

Menopause

Menopause is the time in your life when your menstrual cycle stops. During perimenopause, you slowly stop producing estrogen. Because of the hormone fluctuations, you might get symptoms like mood swings, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and fatigue. It’s important for you to know that due to so many toxins that our environment is overwhelmed with, women are facing menopausal changes at an early age, sometimes as early as 35’s or younger. When we work together, we will develop a personalized plan for you to maximize results and relieve you of menopausal symptoms.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

More than 90% of menstruating women get PMS. The symptoms arise right before your period and can include bloating, cramps, cravings, and weight/mood fluctuations. However, even those these are extremely common in our society, they are not normal. Pain-free periods are what a balanced body looks like and I can help you get there.

Low Sex Drive

Sexual dysfunction like low libido happens when you have trouble becoming aroused for sexual activity. There are many possible causes, including underlying physical and psychological factors. The good news is that with personalized medicine, we can balance your vitamin and mineral levels, hormones and even optimize your gut health to get your sex drive back.

Mood disorders

Mood disorders like depression and anxiety are more common in women than in men. If you experience ongoing feelings of hopelessness, guilt, low energy, or relationship problems, Dr. Ramos can assess you for a mood disorder and help resolve them through personalized medicine. Oftentimes these symptoms are a result of underlying imbalances or dysfunction including gut bacteria overgrowths, hormone imbalance, or nutrient deficiencies, which can be improved with food, lifestyle changes, and supplements.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

CFS is a complex disorder with an unknown cause. If you have it, you experience extreme fatigue. You might also have trouble concentrating, poor quality of sleep, and headaches or joint pain. Optimizing your health on a cellular level through integrative and functional medicine, can help you feel more energized and get your life back.

An important part of women’s health care is implementing healthy daily lifestyle habits as well as attending your annual exams. During your annual women’s health exam, Dr. Ramos can address all of your women’s health questions and concerns.

An annual women’s health exam also includes a breast and pelvic exam, and sometimes, also includes a Pap smear, based if you are due for it or not or if you had abnormal results in the past.

Men's Health Q&A

Men don’t seek medical attention as often as they should. In fact, men tend to die younger, and women outlive men by over five years on average.

Many medical conditions specific to men, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and low testosterone can be diagnosed early during regular health checkups with Dr. Ramos. Having regular checkups with Dr. Ramos also helps build trust and establish a baseline for your general health.

Besides the usual age-appropriate screening and physical examination, Dr. Ramos and her team provide valuable advice about diet, nutrition, stress management, and exercise to help you maintain optimal health and well-being and to help you feel the best you can for years to come.

Men face several unique health challenges as they age, including:

  • Prostate cancer and enlargement
  • Heart disease and high blood pressure (hypertension)/high cholesterol
  • Erectile dysfunction and low testosterone levels
  • Hair loss
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke

Many of these conditions occur because men are more prone to unhealthy lifestyles and dangerous employment conditions. When you work with an Integrative and Functional Medicine trained provider, you will walk away feeling empowered knowing that you can take control of your health.

During your appointment, Dr. Ramos and her staff discuss your medical and family history and review your general wellness, which includes questions about your diet, nutrition, stress levels, and physical exercise. Your weight, height, blood pressure, and heart rate are recorded, and Dr. Ramos performs a physical exam.

She verifies the status of your immunizations and recommends any lab tests and age-appropriate screenings such as those for testicular cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, prostate issues, aortic aneurysm, and osteoporosis. Dr. Ramos also addresses any questions or concerns you have related to your health.

One of the most common complaints of men is erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough to have sex. It’s relatively common in men as they get older, especially for men who have diabetes or had their prostate removed, but it can happen to younger males especially due to the overwhelming toxic environment that we are exposed to daily.

The condition is the result of the complex interplay between physical and psychological causes. ED is a red flag that other issues are occurring in the body.

Some men have ED caused by low levels of testosterone (low-T), or any other hormone imbalances in which case the team at Dr. Ramos might recommend testosterone replacement therapy or testosterone enhancers options for younger males such as Clomiphene as the first step, if appropriate based on results of hormones. Other options will include DHEA and pregnenolone replacement.

Her ideal way to fix a sexual imbalance is starting with investigating and optimizing your gut health, if needed, as well as focusing on adrenal stability (cortisol). This can optimize long-lasting results.

The team at Dr. Faride Ramos prefers lifestyle changes and supplement recommendations first based on testing. Then bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). The supplemental hormone is derived from plants and is similar to the natural testosterone in your body. BHRT is administered in various forms like cream, gels, and injections.
